What is the best brand for an electric violin?

I can't afford to spend a ton of money on a incredible high end electric violin but I want to buy something nice, mid range. I'm new in the department of violins.

I would go with a famous brand that has a good rep such as Yamaha. When buying from a brand like this, you can be sure that the instrument will be good quality and can be taken care of easily. Lower priced violins will not have as many sound features such as echo or auto vibrato but will play just like an acoustic violin.

Good luck in your musical future and career,

I have been playing electric violin for a long time. Yamaha makes terrible electric violins. Don’t bother with that.

Most of the pickup things that you attach to an acoustic will not sound like a real electric violin. The technology is inferior to a fine electric violin. You will not be able to process this through effects like reverb, distortion, etc., properly.

Zeta makes fine electric violins.

Another name I will throw out to you is Barcus Berry (but I haven’t checked out their stuff in years. It used to be really good back when electric violins were in their early years).

It’s also important for you to get a good amplifier. If you buy some of these “electric violin” amps they will suck. If you want a nice, smooth sound, then you need a Fender amplifier with tubes. The Hot Rod Deville and the Blues style amps are excellent choices. You can get them on the internet, at Guitar Center, etc. Make sure you get one of the models with built in speakers to save money.

And the Fender amp reverb is incredible. It’s the only reverb you will EVER need for gigs.

I’m afraid there is no cheap shortcut to getting a good electric sound. Make sure you use D’addario Helicore voilin strings, while you’re at it =). If you buy the Yamaha have fun with its treble-loaded screechy noise/sound.
