I was just wondering, is there really a difference between how a normal violin sounds and an electric one does? Is the wound smoother, is there distortion or anything of the sort like an electric guitar?

Electrics plug in. Some are similar to a normal violin, some are not.

Yes, there is a big difference between an electric and an acoustic violin. The only example I can think of is in the Beatles song that’s on the Revolver album, “Tomorrow Never Knows”. It sounds really psychedelic and almost like birds chirping.
You can put a pick-up on either an accoustic guitar or violin, but it will just sound like an amplified accoustic version. The true electric violin is solid, like an electric guitar.
There is a fairly decent example of description and sound in the reference below.

The difference isn’t HUGE in sound if your just plugged into an amp with the electric. But i know that with the electric violin you can buy different pedals almost like an electric guitar to really change the sound, when a normal violin can’t change the sound. Personally i like the electric, but i play electric guitar! And if you really like the sound of the normal wood violin then stick with it because you can’t really get that exact sound out of the electric!
Hope that helps!

Well the difference in sound isn’t very noticeable but the electric violin is used for a more jazz, pop, hip-hop sound.

If you get a real electric violin (not just an acoustic pickup for your bridge) then you can do all kinds of things with distortion and pedals just like an electric guitar only better. I was surprised how easy it is play on a 5, 6 or 7-string violin with frets at a teachers convention. There’s a guy named Mark Wood that goes around with his band playing for school orchestras and he sells his own custom electric violins. You won’t believe it! Be sure to check out the links to his band and youtube videos.
